Htc desire 816 reviews
HTC recommends you gloss regularly
TechRadar rating:
3.5 stars
Muscling into the mid-range market, the Desire 816 is a big smartphone which strikes a good balance between price and function. It draws on HTC's strengths, and manages not to compromise in too many areas, making it great value.
Like:
Dual front-facing speakers; Reasonably priced; MicroSD card support; Big 5.5-inch screen;
Dislike:
Gloss plastic; Non-removable battery; Power button placement; 720p resolution;
Introduction and design
Ratings in depth
Can HTC conquer the middle of the market with the Desire 816? This is an interesting smartphone with respectable specs and an attractive price tag, so where are the compromises?
A plastic body, mid-range processor and 720p display weigh up against dual speakers and a decent 13MP main camera backed up by a 5MP selfie special. All of this can be yours for around £300 (about $500, AU$550) off-contract.
There's no shortage of competition in this space from a mixture of mid-rangers and discounted flagships of yesteryear.
It will have to tempt prospective buyers away from similarly priced phones like the Nexus 5, the Moto X and the OnePlus One.
There are also direct mid-range competitors with larger displays like Samsung's Galaxy Mega and the Nokia Lumia 1320.
Not everyone is willing to blow hundreds on a cutting edge masterpiece of design like the HTC One M8, so there's definitely a market for a smartphone like the Desire 816.
HTC figures that demand starts in Asia, where the 816 was released in March and extends to Europe, where it's rolling out now. There's no word on whether it will land further afield just yet.
The first thing that strikes you about the HTC Desire 816 is its size. This is a big phone. Flagship screens are growing bigger generally and putting into doubt the idea that anything between 5 and 7 inches is a phablet.
This has a 5.5-inch screen in a big plastic slab of a body. It makes the Sony Xperia Z2 look small.
Shooting for the middle of the market means corners have to be cut somewhere. You won't find the high-end design of the One M8 here, although the Desire 816 does sport the same rounded corner profile and front-facing Boomsound speakers. Instead of grills there are larger machined holes to mark the speakers, which look quite good.
The bezels round the screen are fairly large. The small HTC logo at the bottom and the front-facing camera at the top left are the only other details.
Things are similarly sparse on the back, with a camera lens and flash at the top left corner and the lowercase HTC logo again, this time larger, in the middle of the non-removable back plate.
You have to reach up to the top of the left spine to find the power button and that ensures that one-handed operation is beyond you, unless you're a basketball player. The volume rocker sits below the power button and it's split into two large buttons which feel a little loose.
Up top you'll find the standard 3.5mm headphone jack. At the bottom there's the microUSB port.
On the right side there's a plastic flap that you can open with your fingernail to reveal various ports. There's one for your nanoSIM, a microSD card slot, and a mystery port in the middle that leads to another dimension (it's actually for a second SIM card for markets getting the dual SIM version, but it's blocked up on my review unit).
Sadly the flap doesn't mean that the HTC Desire 816 is waterproof, but you won't change your SIM or microSD card often, so it's a nice way to tuck them out of sight.
My review handset was white, which did a pretty good job of hiding the fingerprints and smudges that will no doubt find plaguing the colour versions.
It's a comfortable phone to hold, but it's definitely on the big side and will be unwieldy for some. It's pretty slim at 8mm, but it is 156.6mm tall and 78.7mm across. It's also pretty heavy at 165g.
Glossy plastic doesn't get much classier than this, but it's still glossy plastic. The materials, build quality, and colours remind me of Nokia's Lumia line-up.
The HTC Desire 816 is

Apple's iPhone 5 now launches in india
Now today we're taking it to the next level. Making a huge leap,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said as he launched the iPhone 5 on Wednesday.
The new iPhone is the thinnest and the lightest phone from the Apple stable. At 7.6mm, it is 18 per cent thinner than the existing models. It is also 20 per cent lighter than iPhone4S at 112 gm.
“It's the most beautiful product we've ever made. This is the monumental challenge we had — can you make a phone with more features that is smaller and lighter. Anyone can make a bigger phone," said Apple marketing head Phil Schiller. The iPhone 5 comes in black colour, and also white.
The new screen on iPhone 5 is a 4-inch display compared with 3.5 inch in the earlier version.
Upgraded features
One of the promises made by Apple in the new iPhone is faster performance thanks to a more powerful A6 processor. "Compared to the A5, it's two times faster. It's a huge jump in performance, but 22 per cent smaller," said Schiller.
But perhaps the most amazing new feature in the new iPhone is that it allows you to take panoramic pictures. The 8 Megapixel camera also allows you to take photos while shooting video.
The device, like its predecessor, comes with the Retina display and has the same 326 pixels per inch found in the iPhone 4S. In terms of resolution, users can expect 1,136 x 640, Schiller says.
Apple announced the iPhone 5 will come with support for 4G LTE service, delivering what it calls, "Ultrafast Wireless''.
The new device also comes with improved audio experience. It’s designed with three microphones: one on the front, one on the back, and one on the bottom.
The front and back mics work together to achieve beamforming — a technique that helps iPhone focus on sound from the desired location for clearer audio. New noise-canceling technology reduces background noise.
New Siri features
With iOS 6, Siri understands more questions, knows more answers, and gives you a lot more to talk about. Ask Siri about sports scores and stats, where to eat, what movies to see — even ask Siri to make Facebook posts or tweet for you.
Pricing
In the US market, the iPhone5 will be priced at $199 for the 16GB version and $399 for the 64 GB version under a two-year contract. Unlocked price was not revealed but is expected to be about $900.
The phone will be available starting September 21 in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore... In India, the device is likely to be launched by December.
Analysts take
Jan Dawson, chief telecoms analyst at Ovum, said that the new device highlights the inherent risks involved in Apple’s strategy of only releasing one device at a time, in that it always has to strike a compromise that is most likely to appeal to a wide base of users.
The new device strikes that compromise most dramatically in the increased vertical height. With many Android and Windows Phone devices now significantly larger than the iPhone 4S and gaining popularity, the pressure has grown on Apple to release a larger device.
“By only increasing the vertical height, it’s created a device that’s notably taller and thinner in aspect ratio than most of those Android devices, and as a result it will stand out, which may not be a good thing. While keeping the device small enough for some hands is important, many customers would have wanted something bigger, and they’ll be disappointed,” Dawson said.
Dawson, however, added that the addition of LTE, the improvements in battery life, performance and camera will help the device appeal to existing iPhone users, and either close the gap or broaden its lead against competing devices.
Analysts said that Apple will nevertheless sell tens of millions of iPhone 5 devices in the next few months and well over 100 million in total over the next year.
iPhone users who are currently using an iPhone 4 and have the opportunity to upgrade will no doubt do so in large numbers, and the more fanatical iPhone 4S users will do the same. It will also sell lots of the previous two generations of devices as those go on sale at a lower price.
“But Android’s lead in total shipments and installed base will continue to grow, however, as Apple’s devices continue to target just a subset of the addressable market and Android devices meet a much wider range of customer preferences and price pointsew Delhi: The much-awaited Apple's iPhone 5 hit the Indian market Friday after being launched globally on September 21.
The 16GB variant has been priced at Rs 45,500, 32GB at Rs 52,500 and 64GB at Rs 59,500. The latest version of Apple iPhone will be available in India in both GSM and CDMA.
Apple’s latest flagship phone was up for pre-orders through its Indian carrier Airtel a week ago and reportedly the pre-booking is full.
Airtel had started giving customers the option to pre-order the 16GB Black version of the phone and customers who had pre-booked the device will get to pick their device today.
Apple's iPhone 5 to go on sale tomorrow, price starts at $199
It will take at least two weeks to lay yours hands on the phone, if you haven’t booked it yet.
The Cupertino-based tech giant has decided to appoint Redington and Ingram Micro as distributors for the iPhone 5 in India.
On the specs side, the iPhone 5 has a 4-inch Retina display and comes with an 8MP iSight camera with LED flash and a 1.2MP front facing camera and is housed in a sleek aluminium casing. It is powered by an A6 processor and runs on the latest iOS, the iOS 6
The iPhone 5 will carry the nanoSIM card, a smaller SIM card compared to the microSIM which is used widely. It has 2G, 3G and 4G support as well.
